    1. At first I hated the protagonist and thought he is selfish and cruel. But after finishing it, I realize he is not as bad a person as I thought at first. The true devil was the society. This book demontrates perfectly the injustice and the so called 'right' and 'wrong' mentality of the society that always make human lives miserable and suffocating.

    4. Naalukettu is a veritable depiction of the matriarchal social order of Kerala's Nair community in its final gasp for life. The hero Appunni is a scion of a once rich and powerful family. Appunni is the son of a woman who married a man of her own choices and who did not marry the man whom her Karnavar suggested. So she has to leave the family with her son and Appunni grows up without a father and away from the prestige and protection of the matrilineal home to which he belongs. The novel captures [...]

    7. I read this novel during my childhood days. I can still remember the day I read this novel. I was in my relatives' house and bored to death without doing anything. Then, I found one book in my cousin's book shelf, an old copy of Naalukettu by M.T. After reading first few pages of the book, I got irritated and throw away. But later, I found that I have nothing else to do and whenever I cross the shelf, I felt as if this book is calling me. Then, I again took the book and started reading. I found [...]

    8. the depth of the character is much more than any other i have read before stirring and painful at times

    9. a good read Can't lie, this is the first Malayalam book I have ever read in my life.I did expect a lot more towards the end though

    11. The story of a fruedal Nair family. The Valuvanadan(southern Malabar) story tells about an era of Kerala.

    12. Book #2 of the year. Needless to say, what a beautiful read.Born into difficult circumstances, this master piece by Kerala's favourite writer M.T.Vasudevan Nair, chronicles the journey of Appunni from his boyhood days steeped in poverty and hardships to manhood ,a life he builds on his own hard work and overcoming the tragedies of his situation. 'Naalukettu' - roughly meaning ancestral home - is a retelling of the erst while Kerala Nair way of life,of family feuds and the decay of the matrilineal [...]

    13. It is difficult to comment on the work of the great M.T because it is a reflection of the society. The characters and the setting still haunts Once I finished the book, I closed it and sat still for some time Utterly satisfied and content Lucky to read this masterpiece !

    14. Great novel by M T about the world of Appunni lived in the 40s or 50s of the last century. Its a tale set on the premises of a naaalukettu - during its prominence and in its degradation. The classic novel clearly describes the tale of one of the numerous Nair feudal families that degraded during that social renaissance period Kerala witnessed. One can see the reversal of the protagonist's fate during his life. Great narration by the great author

    15. A simple story of a young boy and his family related problem upto his childhood. MT's skill for writing is unmatchable. he explains the characters in a way that he makes you beleive that they are nothing less than real. the village of Kudallur by the end of the book will feel like a place where you had spent most of your life in. JUST AWESOME!! I'm blessed to read something like this and feel proud to be a Malayali!

    16. MT is one of those writers who is able to draw a true and raw picture of life through his books. No other writer has been able to portray, so vividly, the society structure of feudal Kerala in the beginning of the century. A society that had a lot of complex relationships and which was brutal to the oppressed. Nalukettu aptly captures the frustrations and the innocence of a kid who was born into an ostracised mother. This book has a simple narration style that is so characteristic of MT.

    17. A beautiful novel, that brings back the nostalgia about your village and the persons u see around you. Gives a clear picture on the generation who moved from joint family to nuclear family, from village to cities and thus seen many broken down "tharavadu". When I read the book, I couldn't agree to author, when the hero forgives and gets help from the person who killed his father. But now I have the maturity to understand his feelings, now I understand what life is!!

    18. I Liked:This is my second M T Vasudevan Nair novel. All my prejudice and negative thoughts after reading the first novel (Asuravithu) were washed away by this one. Narrating a story might be easier but taking the reader to the time, place, nature, language, season, characters. can be done only if each of these are conceived by an author in its minute form.My Alternate Thoughts:

    20. One of the earliest books on Kerala, its traditions, family stories and the like. But what keeps Naalukettu different is the way an ancient architecture type is brought in the book and weaved in the storyline. Not just malayalis but anyone can read it. Its a simple story of human love, jealousies, pure emotions, raw observations and some old time charm.

    21. A lovely book. It tells the story of a traditional Malayalam family, its fights and the struggle of Appuni. The story flows smoothly across pages, the descriptions are beautiful it sticks to the point without wavering into unnecessary twists.
